Description

"Every day we try to make a better guitar, every day. You're trying to reach for more, trying to do better, not trying to do the same. A lot of companies are trying to do the same, and that's okay - that's their deal. We're trying to stretch that. Our goal is a little more." - Bill Collings

We recently asked Collings if they'd make us a 290 in a natural finish, somewhat of a nod to the vintage Korina bodied Gibsons we drool over in pics. The result? Classic Gibson Les Paul Special beauty ratcheted up several notches.

The 290 model takes a slab mahogany body and neck and pairs them with a very vintage sounding set of Throbak '52-'54 P90s. These Throbak P90s sound absolutely incredible, btw. They're full of chime, midrange snarl, gorgeous cleans or Marshall half-stack ready overdriven tones, these guitars cover a huge range of tones. In short, think of the 290 as the Gibson-style equivalent of a Tele, or the electric equivalent of a Martin D-18 - which is to say, they're super musical, versatile, shipped down instruments that you want to make music on.

That old expression that "it's all in the hands"? This style of guitar shows you why that's true - they are tone machines, period. Everything you need, nothing you don't. No fancy tops, ornate bindings, etc...just tone and feel which leaves everything else up to you (i.e., your hands). Like all Collings, the build quality and setup are perfect. Priced with original hardshell case.
